Estate Planning for the Unmarried Adult Relationship

Speaker:
Wendy S. Goffe, Shareholder,
Graham and Dunn, Seattle, WA

Summary:

This presentation will cover issues affecting unmarried couples that have chosen not to marry or cannot marry for legal reasons. This presentation will examine the planning that can be done to minimize taxes and ensure that the disposition of assets at death or dissolution of the relationship occurs as intended, as well as provide for guardians of minor children and appropriate agents to handle financial matters and make medical decisions in the event of disability. This presentation will also examine some of the domestic partnership, civil union, and other similar statutes nationally, and the rights and responsibilities they provide. Wendy is an ACTEC Fellow, Adjunct Professor at Seattle University Law School, nationally recognized speaker, advisor and member of various national non-profit and charitable boards, and co-author of “Estate, Tax, and Benefits Planning for Unmarried Couples,” American Bar Association, 2009.
